It has become somewhat of a trend for the foreign gastronomy brands to turn their sights towards India, as they can judge the immense culinary potential of its diners. The past decade bought a tremendous evolution where global gastronomy is concerned in India and Mumbai is hardly left untouched by its development. One of the recent additions to this club is a popular name in London, which has familiarized the fashion of contemporary Cantonese grub to Mumbai’s food circuit. ‘Yauatcha’ first introduced itself in London in 2004 as a modern dim sum teahouse and received its Michelin star within a year of its opening. After seeing the huge potential in India, they opened their second branch in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex, a decision that turned out to be right. Yauatcha is part of Hakkasan group and has an individuality of its own.
In typical sophisticated fashion, Yauatcha does full justice to the name it’s associated with. Forget traditional Chinese aspect, here everything screams contemporariness and affluence. You will be able to relish authentic modern Cantonese food in an elegant western setting. The tea house is divided onto two levels and is equipped with smart formal furnishings. Nothing loud or striking jumps out from the décor. Everything is kept subtle, tasteful and delicate. The majority of colour at play here is grey, which is used in soft and pleasing manner. To contrast they have included some pale yellow chairs in the mix along with a lovely oriental motif embroidered in the upholstery. Their private dining section features a long formal table overlooking the city. The décor is edgy, modern and very upscale.
Yauatcha prepares traditional Cantonese food in modern way and to wash it down offers a plethora of gourmet teas from around the world. Do try their tea-based cocktail or a smoothie with oolong tea. Their dumplings are their showstoppers so it will be highly recommended to feast on them. In first course pick onto truffle & edamame dumplings, three style mushroom cheung fun, the pei fong tong soft shell crab and prawn cheung fun is sensational. Mongolian style lamb chops, stir fried udon noodles, wrapped chicken in Pak Choi with Szechuan sauce, mabo tofu, spicy vegetable fried rice, kung pao chicken and Szechuan vegetable & tofu clay pot, will serve best in main course. End with, chocolate pebble and blueberry pista bar. Yauatcha is quite expensive so keep that in mind.
