Saptapadi – a casual dining restaurant is situated at Purna das Road, Hindustan Park, Kolkata. The Restaurant is open from 12 noon to 10:45 pm. A restaurant such as Saptapadi, comes to our rescue and gives us relief by lending a helping hand in finding some mouthwatering and lip-smacking Bengali and Bangladeshi cuisines straight to our table. There is lovely background music from Uttam-Suchitra movies, wooden furniture and earthenware utensils to add to the ambience. The portraits and stills from the movies also hang on the wall. A perfect place to have a Sunday lunch, the Restaurant is popular for Bengali cuisine and amazing thalis and Durga Puja specials are available here. It is a secret gem when you are set to try Bengali fusion food and that too at a reasonable rate.
Each item served in the thali is excellent. The veg thali has rice, dal, shukto, beguni, jhur jhure, alu bhaja and bhetki paturi and in the non-veg thali, a chicken preparation made in green coriander paste, along with a mutton preparation in a spicy red chilli paste is served. Despite this, their regular menu has an extensive variety. Their signature dishes including Prawn Thermidor and Ilish steak are awesome. Starters such as fish finger with the batter and coating of muri (puffed rice), murgi sobar opore (Mexican fusional dish), posto and chicken fritters, and postor bora, murgi dhoka paneerer torkari, daab chingir baked Alaska baked and dab Chingri are delicious. Other authentic Bengali items such as kacha lonka mutton and macher matha diye daal are very good. Gondhoraj caramel custard is simply out of the world.
The restaurant is not a very large space but it certainly guarantees utmost care, warmth and matchless soul seeking Bengali food to relish your tastebuds. The restaurant is very pocket friendly and a meal for two would cost approximately INR 900. Service was instant and the staff is courteous. The staff is very friendly and everyone comes out with a smiling face and a satisfied soul.
- Try the bhapa murgir paturi (mustard-laced minced chicken patties steamed, wrapped in banana leaves) – it is one of their better dishes
- The ice cream patishapta comes especially recommended, but take a tip and stick to mishti doi, or give desserts a miss
- Or, go for one of their prix fixe thalis that offer quite a decent assortment from their repertoire
