When you think of a south indian restaurant, a picture forms in your mind with old fashioned tables and steel utensils with tiled walls. The toddy shop at hauz khas village is anything but that. This low key and non advertised place is difficult to find but when you do, it will surprise the daylights out of you. Toddy’s is trendy and well decorated. Yellow painted walls and black & white landscapes caught on kerela’s beaches puts this restaurant on another level from other south indian joints. Furniture is light and comfy to invite you to linger for hours. The photographs on the wall are duly captured by a fabulous photographer who have managed to bring in the delights of kerela to delhi streets. The food is served in nice platters gracing on banana leaf.
Toddy’s bring authentic south indian food to your table and makes you wonder for a minute if you are actually sitting on a coastal restaurant enjoying the fare. The restaurant is casual and famous for its lip smacking recipes served in ample proportions. The starters are kothu porotta, deep fried crispy okra, spicy beef fry, kerela fish fry, marinated prawns and a must have Kutty’s fried chicken. This dish is so good it will pull you back each time. Use lovely egg hoppers and Malabar porotta to soak up the hot spicy beef curry. Vegetarians delight in ishtoo or pachakari korma. The vegetables are cooked with whole spices and coconut milk. Meat fans opt for mackerel curry, mutta roast, kozhi kootan and kayal konchu curry. People who love rice accompaniments will love Malabar-style kerela biryani, thair sadam and cheratta puttu. Try kappa which is tapioca tossed with curry leaves and mustard seeds normally eaten with fish curry in kerela.
The desserts at The toddy’s shop are unlike anything you would have eaten before. Semiya payasam, kesari halwa and madakku san are unique and so enjoyable. Beverages boasts of buttermilk, chechi’s cold coffee, nannari sherbet, kaapi, mint lemonade and gingerade. The restaurant provide home delivery option too so you can enjoy coastal fare in your home. The toddy’s shop is cheap and very pocket friendly. If you can find this awesome coastal place then GPS mark it and take along some friends to flaunt your knowledge of culinary scene.
