New Delhi is filled with restaurants that have given the city its gastronomic reputation. Before the city exploded with a barrage of trendy eateries it’s claim to global dining was limited to Chinese, which was the city’s favourite cuisine. In early 90’s New Delhi became a playground for fancy Chinese eateries, especially in hotels. The trend paved way for many fine dining restaurants that we know today as legends. One of the relics of 90’s is the famous ‘Larry’s China’, an elegant old-fashioned dining room known for its superb food and vintage chic vibe. Named after a fictional character, Larry’s China is Vivanta by Taj’s greatest hits. Its location near Khan Market at Sujan Singh Park only adds to its sophisticated charm, luring the A-listers to its tables in search of the old world culinary magic.
The idea after Larry’s China was to give to the diners the pleasure of dining on traditional recipes of House of Ming but for much more affordable prices. Chef Ananda Solomon has crafted a menu that fills you with anticipation and when the food reaches your table sends you into a delicious swoon. Start wading through their vast menu with some appetizers. They do a wonderful selection of, corn kernel pepper salt, chicken pentagon, crispy potatoes with roasted chillies, drunken lobster, drums of heaven, crispy konjee black mushrooms, Larry’s tiger sesame prawns and chicken & spring onion dim sum. Let Larry’s China further woo you with mains like, lobster ginger chilli wine with spring onion, sweet & sour pork, egg plant in hot bean sauce, sliced duck with plum sauce, sweet chilli steamed tofu with asparagus and stir fried prawns Singapore style.
The best way to enjoy Chinese food is with a bowl of fried rice or noodles. Larry’s China even does crispy noodles, an interesting concept worth exploring. Lactose and gluten intolerants have their separate menu to choose from. Chinese cuisine surprises you with a plethora of exotic desserts. Indulge in, mandarin glass peaches, sesame cashew nuts, darsaan, bull’s eye, date pancake, stuffed lychees with dates, caramelized toffee banana or apple and chilled lychees. Dining at Larry’s China gives you a feeling of slipping back in time to the 90’s. The décor is classic 90’s style with touch of oriental to emphasis the theme. The ambience is elegant and old-fashioned.
- Oddly enough, the restaurant Larry's China most resembles is not the House of Ming but an outpost of the Mainland China chain which also has its roots in the Taj tradition
- Because of its location in a hotel it still seems fancier than the Khan Market places without being much more expensive. So, it is a good option if you are entertaining
- Who is Larry? Actually, there never was one. The name is a gimmick but a harmless one
