When it comes to global cuisine, very few restaurants manage to hit the spot. It is about the correct balance of décor, ambience, service and flavour, which achieves the desired effect. A restaurant can alone pull itself from the depths of non-entity by its food alone, but the ambience can take it a long way. Some places have gained a reputation of sorts when it comes to an all-round finesse and counted in the short list is ‘The Residency’ of Crowne Plaza hotel. Crowne Plaza is an old name in the world of hotels and hospitality. It is responsible for introducing to us some very fabulous restaurants that are known for both their food and style. The Residency tops the list. The restaurant is a highly opted dining choice for families and even businessmen who like to take advantage of the restaurant’s classic interiors.
Built along the classy old-fashioned lines, The Residency is the epitome of elegance. The décor feels as if it is stuck in a time wrap, from the wall to wall carpeted floor to the vast levelled ceiling carrying a huge crystal chandelier. Scalloped arches are draped with heavy deep coloured curtains and the furniture is upholstered in a patterned fabric. The style of décor is distinctly vintage so you get a sense of nostalgia when you peek in. The Residency leaves no stone unturned as far as elegance is concerned. The place is ideal for family dinners or small key celebrations as it’s wonderfully spacious but expensive. It may be slightly noisy for business meetings but if you pick a corner table, you might get the privacy you wanted.
The menu of The Residency is a varied one, featuring cuisines like North-Indian, South-Indian, Continental and Chinese. Relax in the luxurious comfort of the dining room and browse through the menu starting with, Cantonese fried chicken, chat pata tawa arbi, tom yum vegetable soup, chilli fish, beetroot salad, baby corn salt & pepper, paneer methi ke tawa tikki, murgh aatish tikka, subz moongphali ke tukde and golden fried baby corn. Main course selection gives a heady anticipation of, kai korma, slow cooked thyme & garlic chicken, gosht biryani, aloo karela, pork salami, dal Khyber, Singapore noodles, pasta with sun dried tomatoes, green beans in soya sauce and spinach ravioli with alfredo sauce. Wrap the meal with an assortment of decadent desserts.
- The Residency has added a new (now de rigeur in Chennai hotels) concept of a sushi and sake bar at the entrance, known as Residency Gallery
- Something seems terribly amiss with the service at the moment; noticeably amateurish, it takes much of the upmarket feel away - I noticed multiple guests voicing their concern. If you are not being looked after properly, bring it to the the manager’s attention or walk out
- The capacious hall lamentably does a great job of amplifying chatter and wails. This is not the place for a quiet conversation or a date. However things do improve with live music in the evening
