Well, who doesn’t love Asian food? We know we do! It’s a weekly tradition in our home to stop by for an Asian fix whenever we are out shopping. We adore to dunk our dim sums in their salty dipping sauce and then move on with a bowl of stringy aromatic noodles entwined around our chopsticks. Chennai has some great old-fashioned Chinese places popular with families but our family like a little bit of modernity in our food. Hence, we always end up choosing the new kid on the block – ‘Mamagoto’. This very popular chain of restaurants has already created ripples in cities like Delhi and Mumbai and after much awaited hold-our-breath period, the restaurant decided to choose Nungambakkam, Chennai as their 9th outpost. So anticipated was the arrival that the restaurant already became popular and extremely busy soon after its opening. It’s wise to call ahead to bag a table even on weekdays.
Mamagoto is not only known for its mouth-watering menu but also for its perky décor. The restaurant follows a very quirky, pop Asian art kind of theme which seems to amuse the patrons a lot. The moment you enter, you are met with a vibrant and eye-catching décor. The idea is to shock and awe. Fashioned like an Asian circus canopy, the room is covered in multi-coloured stripes in diagonal design. Large pop Asian art works are mounted on the walls and on the ceiling too. Warm and cosy lightweight furniture is added in discreet distance. There is plenty of space to sit around. An artsy chandelier of vintage mason jars throws bright light around the room. Vibe is casual, striking, fun and quirky.
Mamagoto makes their play on South East Asian cuisine by branching out in Asian and Thai cuisine. Menu is exciting and not-so-cheap but it fills you with anticipation. Don’t wait up and dig into, water chestnut spring roll, traditional crispy lamb, vegetable basil cups, hua hin highway rolls, sesame prawn balls, street chicken satay, old school gyoza, imported pork spare ribs, crispy lotus stem, rock shrimp tempura, java grilled fish in red hot ‘sambal’ sauce and traditional peking dumplings. If you are confused or on a go then opt for their rice bowls. If not pick, chicken three pepper bomb, crispy fish fillet, masaman curry, lamb with chilli & hoisin sauce, wan chai midnight chicken and London’s china town tofu. Dessert course is pretty good to and worth looking into.
