Barbeque parties have always been a weakness of mine. The pleasure of setting up a live grill in your backyard and loading it with beautiful marinated chunks of meat and veggies is my idea of a perfect dinner party. Throw some fish fillets on the grill and let it sizzle to perfection while your friend tosses a salad together to go with the meat. Uncork a bottle of nice red and let the magic of barbeque relax you into submission. And what better place to enjoy a nice grilled fish with raging sea in the background than at Chennai. You might not have a backyard or your own live grill but that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the pleasure of barbeque. Just drive down to ‘Grill Box’ where each table is fitted with a live grill box on which you can play chef. Next time you want to flex some wrist muscles, take your family to Grill Box in T. Nagar.
Unlike its sister concern, Grill Box in T. Nagar area is built along the modern lines. Structure is geometric and edgy. While the look is classy and attractive, the idea is to be timeless. The designer has played with lighting cleverly by using the pillars as the source of brightness. A central glass cube acts as the buffet/service cubicle while the tables surrounds it neatly. To give the restaurant a proper look formal dining tables are thrown into the mix. The overall effect is cheerful, bright, formal and elegant. Grill Box earns brownie points for the service which is smooth, efficient and attentive. The servers are at your beck and call at all times. You are treated with a polite friendliness which leaves you feeling welcome.
Grill Box’s menu showcases a wide variety of cuisines. You can sample Continental, Chinese, North-Indian, Barbeque and Mediterranean fully. Food is delicious and prepared well. It’s a good place for families, team lunches and small get-togethers. Open the menu with appetizers like, rice corn walnut tikki, mutton gilafi seekh, adraki paneer tikka, chicken shis touk, Cajun spice potatoes, angara murgh, BBQ pineapple, charmoule fish, achari kumbh and tandoor prawn. Move onto the main course next with, tomato ka salan, srilankan crab curry, aloo gobi mutter, fish in Manchurian sauce, kandari vegetables, chilli egg, pan fried veg noodles, mutton biryani and methi chaman. Indulge your sweet tooth with badam phirnee, chocolate pastry, pineapple pudding cake and basbousa.
- Though the buffet is about Rs 100 to 200 cheaper than Barbeque Nation or Absolute Barbecues (depending on the timings), there is a disproportionate drop in the food, service and experience
- Ironically, you might be better off hogging on the main course rather than the signature grills, which only come in three varieties (for non-vegetarians) and bite-sized cuts. The appetisers and desserts are not worth the calories
- The inverted chimney-like tube is an air blower. You can lower it to the table and speed up the grilling
