No trip to Bengaluru is ever complete without some desi regional fare that gives you the true gist of the city you’re in. It’s the whiff of the regional curries and cool Bengaluru air that ties everything together in a neat bow. But those who are new to the city won’t know where to go to get that authentic local flavour. This is where we come in. It’s a common known fact amongst Bengaluru locals that for good wholesome Southern flair one has to visit ‘Karavalli’ at least once. This charming culinary haven is famous with the foodies for its stunning menu and even better ambience. It is part of The Gateway Hotel on Residency Road, Bengaluru, and is a superb addition to the city’s gastronomy circuit. It is a complete dining experience, something one must try while in Bengaluru.
Karavalli is referred to as go-to place for authentic regional fare, especially succulent delectable seafood. Here you have a chance to feast on true regional food such as delicacies from Mangalorean, Konkan and Kerala kitchens. This is one of the best places to dine in Bengaluru city and one of the loveliest. The menu is quite extensive so read carefully before wading in. Try some Karavalli blends to go with the appetizers, Karavalli tender, Karavalli sour or Karavalli rasam martini. Munch alongside on, tiger prawns roast, kaaju kotmir vade, meen pollichathu, neitha kori, kinnya masala dosa, crab milagu fry and octopus sukka. Couple some appam or Malabar paratha to go with curries like, kori gassi, avial, Karavalli crab curry, pork sorpotel, vazhapoo thoran, Karavalli mutton curry and nagli ambat.
The final sweet course is just as interesting as rest of the menu. Indulge in southern classics like, chiroti, dodol, elaneer payasam, ada pradhaman, bebinca, tamarind ice cream and gatti shaavige payasa. Housed in a slanted roof structure, Karavalli is a true southern architectural delight. Interiors are designed in a way to emphasis the old-fashioned regional charm. Large glass paned windows are added about the room to bridge the nature with the interiors. While the indoors are charming, it’s their outdoor dining area that takes your breath away. Sprawled in a lush green garden under the canopy of palm trees, Karavalli is both serene and classy. It may be an expensive place to dine but its certainly enchanting.
- Keep an eye on social media for the annual crab festival, Aqua fest and the Syrian Malabar breakfast promotions that are always short ones, but worth taking the trouble to try. Think 'Crab Mliagu', 'Appam' and 'Ishtew' and so much more
- 'Sungatache Kodi with Red Boiled Rice' is a great combination to have
- The 'Kadala Gassi' and the 'Gobi Kempu Bezule' are lovely vegetarian options
